Navigating the frozen northern reaches of the Lands Between represents one of the most critical milestones in Elden Ring. The Mountaintops of the Giants is a vast, late-game territory filled with treacherous cliffs, lethal boss fights, and essential story progression points. Understanding how to unlock this region and uncover its map fragments is key to exploring the zone effectively.

How to Reach the Mountaintops of the Giants

To gain entry to this snowy expanse, players must first defeat Morgott the Omen King inside the Leyndell Royal Capital. Following this victory, resting at the nearby Site of Grace triggers a conversation with Melina, who grants you the Rold Medallion. With the medallion in hand, head east from Leyndell through the grand forbidden gate to access the Grand Lift of Rold.

Presenting the Rold Medallion at the lift activates the mechanism, carrying your character directly to the snow-covered peaks. This elevator serves as the main gateway into the lower western section of the region. From here, players can begin charting their journey through the mountain passes and ancient ruins.

Locating the Western Map Fragment

Upon exiting the Grand Lift of Rold, follow the linear snowy path forward toward the Zamor Ruins. Before entering the ruins themselves, keep an eye on the right side of the main trail. You will find a stone monument stele standing prominently along the pathway.

Interacting with this stele rewards you with the Mountaintops of the Giants, West map fragment. Revealing this portion of the map makes navigating toward Castle Sol and the frozen river canyons significantly easier. It serves as your primary reference point during the initial hours of northern exploration.

Finding the Eastern Map Fragment

Unlocking the eastern half of the mountains requires pushing deeper past the central valley and across the narrow stone bridge. Travelers must cross the Freezing Lake area and head south past enemy encampments. Follow the path leading toward the giant chain bridge that spans across the deep chasm.

Cross the massive chain to reach the Giants' Gravepost Site of Grace on the opposite cliffside. Situated nearby at another stone obelisk is the eastern map fragment. Acquiring this item completes the main overland map for the region, highlighting the final path up toward the Forge of the Giants.

Unlocking the Secret Consecrated Snowfield

Beyond the standard mountain paths lies a hidden subregion known as the Consecrated Snowfield. Accessing this fog-laden plain requires assembling both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. Once retrieved, return to the Grand Lift of Rold and switch action prompts to hoist the secret medallion.

This transports you to a hidden pathway leading directly into the lowlands. The map fragment for this obscured zone is located further north along the central road near the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace. Collecting all three fragments ensures complete visibility across every corner of the northern realm.
